Islamabad (PTI): The government has turned down deposed Pakistan Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s request for providing a tutor for two of his children, who are unable to attend school as the entire family is under house arrest.
The move prompted a senior lawyer to serve legal notices on the secretaries of the law and interior ministries for not providing a tutor for Chaudhry’s children.
Chaudhry’s daughters Ifra (18) and Palwasha (16) and their seven-year-old brother Ahmad Balaj have not been allowed to attend classes since their father was placed under house arrest following the imposition of emergency on November 3 last year.
Palwasha, who was to take her O-levels exam at the British School last year, was not allowed to step out for the test. The school had to make special arrangements and send the examination papers to Chaudhry’s home in the Judges Colony.
Chaudhry had sought a tutor for Balaj and Palwasha, but the request was turned down by the government, sources close to his family said.
Senior lawyer Tariq Aziz sent a legal notice to the law and interior secretaries for rejecting Chaudhry’s request for a tutor for his children. Aziz pointed out in the notice that the children’s fundamental right was being violated by denying them access to education.
“The children are facing great educational loss because they have no access to their educational institutions, and their tutor has not been allowed to teach them at their house since November 3,” he said.
Aziz warned the two secretaries that they should let Chaudhry hire a tutor for his children within three days of receiving the notice or he would approach the United Nations and the Commonwealth.
