GUJRAT: A country’s progress is linked with the rule and supremacy of judiciary, chief justice (CJ) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said on Saturday. Addressing the Gujrat Bar, he said the judiciary would be considered independent if all the steps taken on November 3, 2007, were declared unconstitutional. He said the lawyers’ ongoing struggle for the supremacy of judiciary had been praised throughout the world. He said the ‘Objectives Resolution’ was part of the constitution, which guarantees an independent judiciary. Separately, addressing the Gujranwala Bar, the sacked CJ said democratic governments had unfortunately ruled for only 24 years since the inception of Pakistan. But no dictator will now dare to take over the government because of the lawyers’ struggle, he added. He apologised to the lawyers for reaching Gujranwala late, saying that he had been warmly welcomed on his way from Islamabad to Gujranwala.
Progress lies in supremacy of law: CJ Iftikhar.
