KARACHI: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry Saturday said the Supreme Court (SC) functions in its own constitutional domain.
Addressing in Lawyers’ role signing ceremony at Karachi Registry of Supreme Court, Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said that the Supreme Court has always worked with in the constitutional limits and it is the responsibility of lawyers and every citizen to protect the constitution and to obey the law.
The Chief Justice said it is unfortunate that it was the PCO judges that dealt a blow to the Constitution in past.
Commenting on the Lawyer Movement, the Chief Justice said the movement which lawyers set in motion in the wake of November 3 decision, is still in progress. He said that lawyers struggled for restoration of democracy and supremacy of constitution.
In the ceremony, twenty three lawyers were allowed to present in the Supreme Court which include one female lawyer and two lawyers from Balochistan.
‘We welcome the new lawyers. We have played our part of the innings; now, tomorrow belongs to you,’ he told the gathering of lawyers, adding anyone of them can become the Chief Justice of Pakistan in future.
Earlier, a meeting of building committee was held headed by the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in which, a briefing was given regarding judicial lockups and servant quarters.
