RAWALPINDI: PPP’s central leader senator Safdar Abbasi has said that if Benazir Bhutto was alive, the Bhurban declaration would have been implemented and deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry would have been restored.
He was speaking at Geo News’ Meray Mutabiq programme of Dr Shahid Masood on Sunday. He said that Benazir Bhutto had wished to restore deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry after getting majority in the Parliament, which would help revive country’s institutions and supremacy of the Parliament.

Abbasi said Shaheed Benazir Bhutto entered a deal with General Musharraf for fair and transparent election, as she thought that it was a chance for bringing back democracy to Pakistan. He said Benazir Bhutto signed Charter of Democracy with Mian Nawaz Sharif for revival of democracy through fair election in the country. He said that all political parties had supported Charter of Democracy, which calls for parliamentary democratic system in the country. He said Benazir Bhutto had returned to the country for becoming a member of the Parliament and no one could have stopped her from becoming prime minister.

The PPP senator was of the view that the Presidency had become more powerful, instead of the Parliament, saying that the PPP would have to think about implementing the commitment of BB to Charter of Democracy. He said that only official FIR about murder of the BB had been registered and no effort had been made to file FIR by the party or family in this regard.

Speaking in the same programme, former president of SCBA Aitzaz Ahsan said that in his view Safdar Abbasi was right. He said that October 18 Karsaz incident’s FIR was a joint report, as one was registered by the Sindh interim government and the other one was registered by Benazir Bhutto herself, who was assisted by Latif Khosa.

He said that according to his information only few reports about the Liaquat Bagh incident were registered in Roznamcha. Aitzaz said that if BB was alive, deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry would have been reinstated. He was also of the view that Benazir Bhutto would have implemented Charter of Democracy, and abolished 17th amendment. He asked President Asif Ali Zardari to restore deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, saying that NRO was no hurdle in the reinstatement of the deposed chief justice.
